Kirklees Healthy School Standard
A Guide for School Staff
As a member of the school staff -
you know that children are more likely to be well-behaved and learn better in a school where they are happy. The kind of school where you can be sure that this happens is a healthy school.
In a healthy school pupils, colleagues, parents, governors and the wider community all work with you to a common purpose.

Criteria for the new Kirklees Healthy School Standard
1. There must be a whole-school awareness of health promotion and the school has to have a named Health Promotion Co-ordinator
2. There must be a developmental PSHCE education programme
3. The school must either be totally non-smoking or fully operate the Kirklees smoking policy and show it is working towards being completely smoke free
4. a) If running a tuck shop the school must provide healthy options
b) The school meals must offer well balanced, nutritious options and give guidance to students about what that constitutes
5. The school must have a safe, clean, well ordered and stimulating environment
6. The school must encourage the on-going and active involvement of pupils, staff, governors, parents and members of the local community
7. There must be clear evidence of a supportive school ethos which values all members of the school community
8. The school must offer a broad and balanced physical education and physical activity programme, provide an environment which encourages physical activity, and teach children the importance of staying active for life
9. The school must identify a specific achievement, within the wider context of health promotion, which the school has been involved in
Our school is in a good position to work towards achieving the Kirklees Healthy School Standard, and be recognised as a healthy school.
Young people achieve most when their learning and health are considered together.

A healthy school is one which:
teaches Personal, Social & Health Education - which enables pupils to make positive, responsible choice
effectively addresses issues of social inclusion in its curriculum, organisation and pastoral system
reflects the principles of sustainable development and democratic renewal
ensures pupils have positive experiences of being young citizens, and citizenship education
works hard to promote an environment in which pupils, staff and families feel safe, valued and stimulated
The Kirklees Healthy School Standard gives you a structure and a process through which all of this can be achieved.

The Kirklees Healthy School Standard
What does the school get out of it?
The school gets valuable support from the entire school community, and will have better working relationships with parents, pupils, governors, outside support agencies and the local community.
What will the pupils get out of it?
The pupils should achieve more at school if their health and learning needs are met, and that means achievement in their social and personal lives as well as academic results.
What can you do to help?
Talk to your pupils and colleagues about the standard. Why not bring it up at a team, department or staff meeting? Is is your opportunity to use the Standard to address any concerns you have about the personal and social development of pupils. Better still, you could volunteer to help the school work towards the Standard by serving on a task group, overseeing the achievement of one part of the Standard and encouraging others to become involved.
